From roads to rails – Etihad Rail brings a modern way of travelling, connecting cities, people, and markets across the nation.
Picture this: You’re in Abu Dhabi and need to get to Dubai. During rush hour, the drive can stretch to 1.5–2 hours; in lighter traffic, it’s about an hour. Soon, however, Etihad Rail – the national railway – will cut this journey down to just 30 minutes. A comfortable, air-conditioned train will take you across deserts and through cities quickly, safely, and sustainably.
What is Etihad Rail?
Etihad Rail is the national railway network designed to connect all seven emirates – from Abu Dhabi through Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Ras Al Khaimah, and Fujairah. Initiated more than a decade ago, the project aims to provide an alternative to congested roads, stimulate economic growth, and increase the efficiency of passenger and freight transport.
Once completed, the network will span over 1,200 km, linking major cities, industrial zones, and ports. Etihad Rail is a modern, sustainable, and fast alternative – trains will be air-conditioned, safe, and comfortable.
The project is currently under active construction, with some sections already operational for freight transport. Passenger services are expected to launch gradually from 2026–2027, with the total investment estimated at approximately AED 30 billion (~USD 8.2 billion). The initiative is led by the UAE government and Etihad Rail Company, responsible for planning, construction, and operations. In the future, connections to Oman and Saudi Arabia are being considered, creating a strategic railway corridor for the region.
Estimated train travel times from Abu Dhabi:
Dubai: ~30 min
Sharjah: ~1 hr
Ajman: ~1 hr 5 min
Umm Al Quwain: ~1 hr 15 min
Ras Al Khaimah: ~1 hr 30 min
Fujairah: ~1 hr 45 min
Tourist tips for each emirate:
Dubai: Burj Khalifa, luxury shopping, modern architecture
Sharjah: Cultural centres, traditional souks, museums
Ajman: Picturesque coastline, historic forts
Umm Al Quwain: Peaceful beaches, water sports
Ras Al Khaimah: Hajar Mountains, zipline, trekking
Fujairah: Beautiful beaches, Al-Bidyah Fort
What other impact will the railway have?
Etihad Rail opens new opportunities for investors and urban development. Stations along the railway are becoming hubs for new residential districts and commercial areas, while previously remote locations gain strategic importance. Improved access to jobs and tourist destinations boosts economic growth and enhances the attractiveness of each emirate. At the same time, the modern railway network will enable more efficient freight transport and connect industrial zones, making the UAE’s infrastructure more cohesive and dynamic. Etihad Rail is not just a transport project – it is the new lifeline of the nation, connecting cities, people, and economies, and paving the way for a modern, fast, and convenient UAE for everyone.
