You’ve probably heard of Ramadan before. But why is this month so important for the Muslim faith? Find out in today’s article.
What is Ramadan and why is it so important?
Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar and commemorates the revelation of the Quran to the Prophet Muhammad. For Muslims, it is a time of intense faith, focusing on spiritual growth, prayers, and acts of kindness. Fasting during Ramadan is also one of the five pillars of Islam, meaning it is a fundamental element of the Muslim faith.
How is the date of Ramadan determined?
Since the Islamic calendar is lunar, the start of Ramadan shifts each year by approximately 10–12 days. The exact date depends on the sighting of the new moon, which means it can only be confirmed shortly before the start. Therefore, Ramadan falls on a different part of the Gregorian calendar every year. This year, Ramadan begins on the evening of February 28 and ends on the evening of March 30.
What traditions are observed during Ramadan?
The main tradition is fasting (sawm), during which Muslims refrain from eating, drinking, and other physical needs from dawn to sunset. The fast is broken with an evening meal called iftar, which often begins with dates and water, followed by traditional dishes. Before dawn, suhoor is consumed, the last meal before the daily fast begins.
In addition to fasting, Ramadan is also a time of intense prayer, Quran reading, and charitable activities. During this time, Muslims try to help the poor and needy, for example through zakat, which is a mandatory religious charity.
At the end of Ramadan, Muslims celebrate Eid al-Fitr, the festival of breaking the fast, which is a joyful event full of family gatherings, festive meals, and the exchange of gifts.
How to Approach Ramadan If You Do Not Celebrate It?
If you live or work in a Muslim community, it is respectful to avoid eating and drinking in public during the day. A kind gesture is also to greet your Muslim friends or colleagues with “Ramadan Kareem” or “Ramadan Mubarak”, which mean “Generous Ramadan” and “Blessed Ramadan”, respectively.
Ramadan is not just about fasting; it is mainly about spiritual purification, compassion, and bringing the community together. It is a time when people focus on what truly matters in life - family, faith, and mutual support. ✨
What Benefits Does Ramadan Offer for Investors?
During this period, developers offer numerous extra incentives, including special payment plans, fully furnished apartments, exemption from the 4% property registration fee, and many other perks.
